Arthur A. Filete of Massapequa, NY died November 15, 2022 He was born August 28, 1926 in Brooklyn, NY to Italian immigrants Josephine and Anthony Filete. He moved to Massapequa when he was 7 years old and spent the remainder of his life there. He was a proud Navy veteran. He served during WWII and was awarded the French National Legion of Honor Medal. After being honorably discharged he went to work for Grumman Aerospace where he met the love of life Patricia Duncan. They were married in 1959, and had 50 wonderful years together before her death in 2009.He retired from Grumman after 40 years, and began a second career as the Deputy Commissioner of Youth and Community services for the Town of Oyster Bay. He finally retired at the age of 80 and was able to devote his free time to researching his Italian genealogy and continuing his relationships with his former shipmates from the Destroyer Escort Jacob Jones.He was an active member in the American Legion. He served as the Massapequa Post Commander from 1950-1951, and from 1956-1957 he served as the youngest ever elected County Commander.He was a devoted husband and father for whom family was the most important thing. His strong faith guided him throughout his life, especially in his widowed years. Arthur and Patricia enjoyed traveling in both the United States and abroad, and one of his most special memories was a trip to Sicily meeting up with his extended family.His loving and devoted family includes three daughters: Rachel O’Brien of Seaside Heights NJ, and her partner Jeff Bernardy, Tara Bartolomeo of Cary NC and her husband Tom, and Heather Costa of Commack NY and her husband Jim.Arthur was blessed to have 7 grandchildren: Derek and his wife Stephanie, Sarah and her husband Matt, Anthony and his fiancée Emily, Brittany and her husband Matt, Chelsea, Kevin, Rachel and her husband John.Arthur was doubly blessed to have 5 great grandchildren – Avery, Conor, Samantha, Michael, and Liam.He was admired and loved by many and will be greatly missed.In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Tunnels to Towers organization. t2t.org

I’m very sorry to hear of Arthur’s passing, I saw him for the last time right before the whole pandemic started. An unlikely friend ship started when he came to the Apple Store after his wife’s passing. After selling him a computer he asked if he could pay me to help set it up. After a couple of more visits to help him here and there, I insisted he stop paying me as he was just a nice guy and I lived near by. Then as the years went on and I moved to brooklyn, I would just check in from time to time as I went out to Long Island to visit old friends. He told me the story of how he was born in his Brooklyn apartment on the kitchen table. He asked if I could arrange to take him there. Capturing that memory of a man returning to his childhood birth place will always be my favorite memory. God rest your soul Arthur and thank you for all the great chats at the Massapequa dinner
