I’ve known Carmela for only a short time, but in that time I’ve witnessed true bravery, strength and love, not just through her but also her family. Phyllis, Linda, and Anthony, it was truly a pleasure to have met your mom, and knowing how much she was loved. Rest Easy Carmela (sweet cheeks) ?

You know that saying that some people come into your life briefly, in the scheme of things, but leave a lasting impression, decades down the line? That was Carmela Tisi for me. I was maybe 12 years old when we met. She was the mother of my best friend at the time, Phyllis. Things at home during that period were not great, so I spent almost all my time at Phyllis’ house. They became my surrogate family, Carmela my second mother. She treated me like one of her own, and that meant in every regard. She loved me fiercely, but she didn’t hesitate to tell me when I was being an ass. She welcomed me any and every time I showed up at the door, and she also sent me home when she knew that’s where I needed to be. Things happen, life goes on and we lost touch. I haven’t seen her in decades, although we’ve had sporadic conversations on Facebook over the past few years. As frequently happens for me, I will often hear a song that reminds me of her, and I always think back with such fondness. Carmela passed away a few days ago. It’s weird, because as I said, I haven’t seen or heard her voice since probably 1990-something. But when I saw the announcement of her passing, I felt like I had lost something I didn’t even know I still had. I guess that’s how much she meant to me at that time in my life. Phyllis, I hope you and your family are finding comfort knowing she was well loved. I can say for sure that she was for me.

I’ve had the privilege of knowing and working with Carmela! A friendship since 2009 with this funny and beautiful lady. I always enjoyed her sense of humor and her smile that I’ll never forget. Through Carmela, came another forever friend- her daughter Phyllis! We all worked together at Delmonte Smelson Jewelers, Phyllis and Carmela on alternate days, so you can imagine that I was well entertained each day! Carmela bringing me home cooked lunches and we were forever trying our luck with lottery tickets! Carmela will always have a special place in my heart- each time we spoke, the first thing she’d ask me is “how’s mommy” how sweet/ always asking about my mom. Rest peacefully my friend Carmela, I know your quick wit and smile will entertain everyone in heaven! Until we meet again… I love you ❤️

Aunt Carmela - one of a kind and the truest blessing to us all. Grateful for all the wonderful memories and stories we shared over the years. There was never a moment with you that lacked laughter or honesty and that combo was Carmela. You always ensured Papa Joe knew his baby sister was the best and boy was that the truth!!! Rest In Peace in heaven - all my love. Please watch over your beautiful family.

While my mom and I did not have the closest relationship, I always admired her belief in herself and her ability to prioritize her needs. My mom, Carmela, overcame a lot of hardship and poured herself into who she wanted to be. I am grateful for the time we spent together and how the saddest week of my life was also the most beautiful! You see, I learned that no matter the circumstance the love between a mom and child never dulls, never changes and most certainly, never ends. Sitting with my mom this past week was hard and yet there was no where else I wanted to be. My mom suffered, but even through the suffering, there were brief moments of “Carmelaisms” when there was no choice but to laugh . Her quick wit and smile, Oh Man, that smile!! My mom was known for this! It was radiant and lit up a room ! That smile was still apparent this week, as she lay there, every so often, catching a glimpse of my staring at her she’d SMILE and say “Hey Kid” before she’d just close her eyes again. I will miss you mom! I will miss Your childlike demeanor, our conversations and, yes mom, even our arguments! In your own words mom, “Have a beautiful day!” Love, “the one that looks the youngest but is the oldest??”

To my beloved grandma You were the best grandparent I could have ever asked for. I will never forget all of our sleepovers when I was a little girl, you teaching me to cook traditional when I was a teen, all of the shows you attended, and the infinite time you called me just to talk and we made each other laugh. I wish I could have another cup of coffee with you. I miss you already so much. I love you more than anything Barbaralynn
