Daniel Patrick Harley passed away from this earth on the morning of January 17, 2025. Dan was the beloved husband of Penny Harley (nee Sweatlock) and loving father to Meaghan, Ceara, and Bryn, beloved son to Billy and Joan Harley (who insisted that he was very handsome), brother to Linda, Mickey and Patti, father-in-law to Alex Troxell, and future father-in-law to-be to Graham Lovell and Mitch Sweeney (if he plays his cards right), cherished brother-in-law to Barbara, Cliff, PJ and Gwynne, and doting uncle to Anna and Rosie, Meredith and Jack, and Liam, Brianna, and James. Dan was a truly loyal friend to many, many people from his childhood friends in Massapequa, to the many Blue Hens in his life, and to the co-workers he met throughout his career.
Dan graduated from Massapequa High School in 1982 where he was an All-County lacrosse player and All-Long Island football player. He was a critical factor in both the 1981 and 1982 Rutger’s Cup teams as their starting middle linebacker and fullback. Dan graduated from the University of Delaware with a degree in biology where he led the Blue Hens lacrosse team to an NCAA playoff appearance and was named All-American. Later, he earned his master’s degree from St. Joseph’s University in Philadelphia.
Dan had a long career which combined entrepreneurship and finance. He worked at the prestigious investment firm Allen & Company and was a founding member of HBV Capital Management and The Greenrose Holding Company. His work led him around the world, and he resided at times in both London and Bahrain.
Dan was a true aesthete, studying and enjoying many of the finer things in life. He was an amateur oysterman, an Austrian Wine Knight, and a member of the Cornell Lab of Ornithology (yes, the bird watchers). However, Dan’s defining quality was his loyal friendship and love for the many people he met throughout his lifetime. Buffeted by the vagaries of life, Dan never backed down from a challenge and never turned his back on a friend.
And when you come and the summer’s in the meadow, or the valley hushed and white with fallen snow, I’ll be there in sunshine or in shadow. Oh Danny boy, oh Danny boy, we love you so.
