It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Danutė Petronėlė Aleksandravičiūtė Bobelienė on October 17th, 2024, at the age of 92. Born in Šestokai, Lithuania on January 1st, 1932 to Povilas and Marija, Danutė migrated to the United States in the wake of World War II and made a home for herself in Massapequa Park, New York.
Danutė earned a bachelor’s degree from Mount St. Joseph University and a master’s degree in history from Hoftsra University. After graduating, she became the principal of the Maironis Lithuanian school and later the superintendent of all east coast Lithuanian schools, helping proliferate her native language and culture among generations of Lithuanian Americans. Danutė married Antanas Arnoldas Bobelis in 1957, raising four children (Vaidotas (1958), Rasa (1960), Darius (1961), and Lina (1962)) over the course of their 61 year marriage.
After the arrival of her first grandchild, Danutė would be known only as “Baba” and would spoil her grandchildren in her “House of Yes”. She spent her time with them telling stories of her life and travels over bowls of alphabet soup. She also passed on her love of cooking, sewing, gardening, and traveling to them, even teaching them how to drive stick shift.
Danutė is survived by her four children, five grandchildren (Gregory, Aleksandra, Emily, Antanas, and Darius), and two great-grandchildren (Gregory and Charlotte). She lived a long and fulfilling life, loving and being loved by many. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
In lieu of flowers, donations to BrightFocus Foundation for Macular Degeneration Research would be greatly appreciated.
