Dorothy D. Karas, formerly of Brooklyn and Little Neck, NY, joined her husband Walter, and parents Dorothy Kelly, and Rita and Edward Walsh in heaven on October 30th, 2024. She is survived by her loving daughters April Fletcher (Doug) and Noelle, as well as her adored granddaughter Reilly Dorothy Fletcher.
Dottie was born in Brooklyn, NY on April 6th, 1946. Her love of Brooklyn remains to this day and is a “Brooklyn Girl” through and through.
She moved to Bayside, NY, and then met her husband Walter while they both worked at Levitt & Sons. They married in 1973 and lived in Little Neck, NY, where they raised their two daughters. She was very active at her daughters school St. Anastasia, and was a tremendous support to her husband as he was the Commander of the American Legion Post 103 in Douglaston, NY.
Dottie loved cruising with her husband and family, and there wasn’t a slot machine she didn’t like. She may have played everyone one in Atlantic City and Las Vegas.
Her life was fulfilled in 2012 when her beautiful granddaughter, Reilly Dorothy was born. Nanny and Pop-Pop helped raise her everyday and they brought such joy into each other’s lives. They moved with her daughter April and family in 2013 to Massapequa Park, NY. She loved her new community and loved taking Reilly to school, dance, and cheerleading among other places, and especially to their favorite store – The Dollar Tree. We enjoyed family trips to Disney World, a Disney Cruise, Universal Studios and Legoland.
She enjoyed watching her beloved Mets take out Philadelphia in her last days, and felt good about next season. She would be thrilled the Yankees lost the World Series.
She has been called a “medical marvel”, “wonder woman” and a “firecracker” over and over in the last few months as she fought like hell to stay with her family.
Nothing ever surpassed her love of her family, which we will carry on. Dottie was one of a kind and there will never be another like her.
In lieu of flowers, she requested donations be made in her name to the school Reilly has called home for the last eight years – St. William the Abbot in Seaford, NY.
