Henry Schmidt passed away peacefully at home after a valiant battle with luekemia.
He was born on April 8,1959 at Brunswick Hospital in Amityville, New York to Henry and Gertrude Schmidt. Henry spent his entire live living in Massapequa Park in the house he was raised in. He attended A.G. Berner High School and though the names of the company changed over the years he remained a loyal government contract painter for over thirty years.
Henry met Rhealyn Furio the love of his life.in 2010 through a mutual friend. Rhealyn and Henry enjoyed recounting the tale of her arrival in the US at the airport and how they kept missing each other. He would go in and she would go out. Finally after a few tries they found each other and were together ever since. Excited to start their new lives the two were married on June 21, 2013 in Farmingdale, New York. Henry became father to Kneil, Rhealyn’s young son raising him as his own and together they began their new lives as a family.
Henry had a soft spot for his furry friends, treating each and every one like the valuable family member they were. grieving for the loss of Candy, Buffy and Ginger and loving Milo who remaining his faithful companion to the end.
Everyone who knew Henry knew how much he loved horse racing and owning several horses of his own. . Henry loved going to local casinos and Flea Markets in his free time. Right to the end he spent his time at home as a passionate Mets fan always hoping for a World Series win. Henry will be remembered for his kind and loving heart and the way that he was always willing to help anyone in need. His infectious laugh and love of a good joke made him a favorite with the staff at Long Island Jewish Hospital. He always made light of the most difficult days and, just like Cheers, “everyone knew his name.”
Henry was a great friend and neighbor. One neighbor shared that all you had to do was open the hood of your car and Henry would be there.
We always chuckled hearing him say “I can’t die Rhealyn will kill me. ” We couldn’t have asked for a better husband, father, brother, uncle or friend. He will be deeply missed by everyone who knew and loved him every day.
Henry is survived by his wife Rhealyn, son Kneil , brother Gene Schmidt sister-in-law Angela, nieces Melissa Cleveland and Heather Decoteau, nephews Chris and Patrick Schmidt and grand nieces Taylor, Bailey, and Jes Cleveland and grand nephews Noah and Calan Schmidt, and Gavin Decoteau.
