Irene Ann Macfie was born in Brooklyn, NY and raised in Ozone Park. As a child, she remembers the effects of WWII on her family. She recalled days riding the trolley to Coney Island in a woolen bathing suit and playing on the beach. She briefly worked as a bank secretary in Manhattan, New York before marrying and settling in West Babylon NY. She went on to go to nursing school and then to have a nursing career while continuing to raise her family as a single mother. She subsequently met the love of her life Bruce Macfie and they were married for 26 years before his death in 2002. She was a wonderful cook, avid gardener and never blinked at entertaining a crowd of 20 + people at the holidays or caring for her six children. Irene was practical, determined and highly intelligent. We admired her for her strength in facing any of life’s adversities, including the death of her husband Bruce and 2 of her six children. She had a love for learning and a passion for travel that she was able to maintain until the last 5 years of her life. She was tech savvy for her age and was quite handy with her iPad. She never hesitated to learn new skills like meditation, or enroll in continuing education classes or to learn Spanish in her 80th decade!! She faced life changes with the thought that they were the “vicissitudes” of life and we just have to learn to adjust to them. We know she has probably embraced her new Heavenly body and home and has probably planned a party for those she missed on earth. She is survived by four children and multiple grandchildren and nieces who will miss her smile and her infectious laugh.
