James Joseph “Jim” Harvey age 83, on December 30, 2020 of Massapequa, NY.
Jim passed away peacefully at the Massapequa Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing after a long illness; he is survived by his devoted wife Bernadette “Bernie” and his loving children: James (Irene), Kathleen, Maryellen (John , Brian (Kristen); along with thirteen grandchildren: Read, Elizabeth, Jack, Scarlet, Owen, Emily, Max, Meghan, John, Erin, Tyler, Kacey and Bailey. He is also survived by his sister Mary Teresa Harvey – Sister of Mercy and his brother Bernard (Maureen).
James was born to Catherine and James Harvey on March 5, 1937 in Brooklyn, NY. He graduated from Archbishop Loughlin in 1956 and enlisted in the Army where he spent time based around the world including Korea. Upon his honorable discharge Jim joined the Equitable Life Insurance Company while taking night classes at The College of Insurance in Manhattan. Jim met the love of his life Bernadette “Bernie” and they married in June of 1966. Together they raised their four beautiful children in Massapequa, NY. Jim worked for the Equitable in New York City until his retirement in 1995.
Everyone knew Jim to be a humble, kind, family man. He was a true gentleman and fiercely loyal to his family and friends. He wanted nothing more than to spend time with the people he loved most. Jim enjoyed telling stories of his days growing up in Brooklyn and the time he spent serving in Korea while in the United States Army.
Jim lived a full and rewarding life, enjoying happy hours on the beaches of Long Island, trips with cherished friends, and rooting for his beloved Giants and Mets. He was a great conversationalist and would invite you into his home and ask about your life and family. Jim had an unwavering faith in God and always put others before himself. He and Bernadette enjoyed volunteering at St. Rose of Lima Church where they made lifelong friends. Jim wanted nothing more than to spend time with his children and grandchildren and he and Bernadette made frequent trips to Colorado and Pennsylvania to be with family.
In lieu of flowers a donation may be made in Jim’s memory to the Long Island Alzheimer’s and Dementia Center.
