James L. Justus, of Massapequa Park, NY passed away on February 22, 2022. Beloved husband of JoAnn of 56 years. Loving father of Christopher (Suzanne) and Lorraine. Cherished grandfather of Jared, Clint and Felicity. Mr. Justus retired from the NYPD as a very proud 1st grade Detective. Instrumental in identifying and arresting serial killer, David Berkowitz, known as the “Son of Sam”. As a member of the NYPD he earned many medals and awards. He was a past Exalted Ruler of the Massapequa Elks and was awarded All Star Exalted Ruler in 1997 and served as secretary for 20 years. He served in the Boy Scouts as an adult volunteer for 41 years and held many positions within the scouting program. He led the Scouts to two Jamborees and designed the shoulder and jacket back patch. He was the recipient of the “District Award of Merit” as well as the “Silver Beaver”, which is the highest award a volunteer can receive from a council. He became a member of “The Order of The Arrow”, a group dedicated to fostering Brotherhood and service, where he earned “Vigil Honor”. He took the scouts to a National Convention as well as numerous Regional Conclaves. As a Scouter, he received the “Lamb Award”, given jointly by his church and BSA for his service to the youth. Mr. Justus will be reposing at the Massapequa Funeral Home, Inc. (north chapel) Friday February 25th from 2pm – 4pm and 7pm – 9pm. Elk services at 8pm followed by a prayer service conducted by Pastor Stumme. Funeral services to be held on Saturday February 26th at 10:30am and will be escorted to Saint David’s Lutheran Church, 20 Clark Blvd. Massapequa Park, NY. by NYPD Ceremonial Officers. Entombment to follow at Pinelawn Memorial Park.
