John St. Jeanos passed away peacefully on March 15, 2022. John was born in Astoria on August 16, 1932 and grew up in West Harlem with his mother Sophie and father Nick, both Greek immigrants, and his brother Jimmy. John enlisted in the Air Force in 1950, during the Korean War, and served on a crew assigned to a B-36 long-range, heavy bomber that carried atomic bombs and was nicknamed the “Peacemaker.” Following his service during the Korean War, John joined the NYPD. Over the span of his 25-year career, John was a patrolman who worked in some of the city’s toughest precincts and was awarded the Police Combat Cross for thwarting an armed robbery of a Bronx liquor store. The Combat Cross, the NYPD’s second highest citation, is awarded for “an act of extraordinary heroism while engaged in personal combat with an armed adversary under circumstances of imminent personal hazard of life.” John also rose to the rank of Sergeant, served in multiple roles including coordinating the NYPD’s Community Affairs Bureau on behalf of then Deputy Commissioner Benjamin Ward, and finished his 25-year NYPD career afloat in the Harbor Unit, a long-held ambition. While he was a cop, John also managed to put himself through college, obtaining a Bachelor of Science from St. Francis College. After he retired from the NYPD, in addition to going fishing as often as he could, John had a successful career in corporate security and real estate, including owning Barberry Real Estate in Massapequa. But the true passion of John’s life was his family. He married Mary in 1960 and together they raised three sons. They were loving parents to John, Mike and Chris and their spouses Kathleen, Laurie and Denise, and loving grandparents to Thomas, Jennifer, Matthew, Michael, Christine, Alexandra, Christopher, Grace and Ava. Unfortunately, after almost 40 years of marriage, John was widowed on March 16, 1999, when he was just 67 years old, and lost his oldest son John to cancer on June 20, 2020. When John was 82, a widower in the final chapter of his long life, he met his companion Rena. Together, John, Rena and their beloved toy poodle SusieQ had a wonderful eight years together. John will be missed by his entire family, Rena, and his dearest friends Robert and Josephine Gamberale and Joe Nycz, but we are also happy he is finally at peace and reunited with his beautiful wife Mary and son John. Rest in peace Pop.
