It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Kenneth W. Worme Jr. who died on Wednesday, November 20, 2024 at the age of 80. The son of Kenneth Winfield Worme Sr. and Alice Worme, he was the eldest of four siblings, Nancy, Donald and Edward. He grew up surrounded by the love of his close-knit family.
Kenneth met his first wife, Barbara Griffo in High School and together with their four children, they built a life filled with love and memories that lasted for many years until her passing in 1992.
After graduating from Ohio State University, Kenneth enlisted in the United States Navy, where he served on the U.S.S Hampshire County (LST-819) with distinction, eventually earning the rank of Lieutenant during the Vietnam War. His time in the Navy and the Pentagon shaped his character and instilled in him a deep sense of duty, discipline, and pride that stayed with him throughout his life. He often spoke proudly of his naval days.
After his military service, Kenneth transitioned to a successful career in the private sector, starting with Emery Air Freight, AEI, Consolidated Freightways, Pilot Air Freight, on through BAX global and finally at DB Schenker, taking on several leadership roles. His strategic mind and unwavering work ethic helped shape the company’s success and earned him the respect and admiration of colleagues. Kenneth often spoke of those colleagues whom he respected and the relationships he maintained long after retirement.
During his time in at BAX Global, Kenneth met his current wife, Alvina, and together with her children, they had a blended extended family. The 4th of July was one holiday that everyone, family and friends, looked forward to every year and became an annual tradition. You could always find Kenneth, his brothers Donald and Edward, his son Kenny and Alvina’s son Stephen hard at a work on the grill or preparing freshly dug clams.
Kenneth could often be found tending to his beautiful garden on warm summer days, a passion he cherished deeply. He found peace in the simplicity of gardening. He loved spending time outdoors, especially fishing in the Great South Bay with his brothers, where he found solace in the sea, the quiet rhythm of casting his line, and the beauty of it all.
Kenneth, when in trusted company, was an erudite man of many stories, and had an ability to captivate an audience. Whether reminiscing about his naval experiences, recounting family memories, or sharing the wisdom he had gained over the years, he had a way of making every conversation feel important and special.
He is survived by his wife Alvina, her children Stephen, Jeffrey, Kerry, Danielle, grandson Marquis and their children, his children Lisa, Kenneth, Melissa, Elizabeth and his granddaughter Grace, his siblings, Nancy, Don, and Edward and many other loving family members and friends.
A memorial service will be held at Massapequa Funeral Home on Tuesday, December 3, 2024, where we will celebrate the life of a man who gave so much to those around him. The family asks for any donations to be made to St. Jude Children’s Hospital or a Veteran’s charity of your choosing in his memory.
Kenneth will be deeply missed by all who knew him, but his legacy of love, service, and joy will continue to live on in the hearts of his family and friends. May he rest in peace.
