In 1984, when I was around 15 years old, Mr. Bayen lent me his own personal LP boxset of the complete Charlie Parker "Savoy Sessions". My life was changed forever. Little did either of us know that this single example of Mr. Bayen's generosity and kindness would put me directly onto the path of personal and musical fulfillment for the rest of my life. Any of history's great minds would smile proudly knowing that Mr. Bayen took it upon himself to elevate the lives of others.

I just learned of Kevin’s passing and I am so sorry to hear this. I sat next to him during many Zone meetings and had a deep respect for his organizational skills in particular. He was always on top of the issues on the table and had thoughtful comments about them. He also was quite helpful to me as a new Zone Rep and I always held him in high regard. I wish his family and friends peace, calm and joy in his memory. Linda Staiger

I met Kevin right after the Bayens moved to Massapequa. The very first day we discovered that we had a shared birthday. Our paths crossed less and less over the years, but every time I saw him he was upbeat, smiling, and sincerely glad to see you. We were roomies on the golf trip a couple of years ago and it was great. KB was truly nice, kind, and quite simply a DECENT human being. RIP Kev, know that the music will never stop.

We are thinking of Mr. Bayen and his family at this sorrowful time. He believed in our son, Michael, and helped him succeed as a trumpet player. We will never forget his wit, wisdom, and kindness. Rest In Peace, Music Man

Dear Gale ... sending you deep condolences and love to you and your family. I first met Kevin MANY years ago at Dorney Park where we had brought our respective high school performing groups (my Babylon HS kids and Kevin's Hewlett kids) to perform at a music festival competition. All I remember of that first meeting was that Kevin and his kids "cleaned up" in just about every judging category! Over the years you were a mover and shaker, Kevin. NMEA, NYSSMA, instrumental jazz education, music education administration ... what a legacy you have left behind! The NYS music education community will never forget your many contributions to our field nor will we ever forget your friendship. Rest easy, Kevin ...

A little anecdote for Gale and the family. Dear Kevin, I 'knew' you before we actually met because you were FAMOUS in the world of music education! During one early morning band rehearsal, your dearest, Gale, slipped and fell in the Marion Street cafeteria. Unfortunately, for Gale, this would not be the only time she suffered a band rehearsal-related injury. I sat with her in the nurse's office as we waited for you to run over from Hewlett-Woodmere. You came into the nurses office----looked at Gale---looked at me----and just shook your head. Thank God, she was fine. But I will never forget the look on your face! Love, Karen and Ed

Mr.Bayen was a great man. He was my band teacher many years ago. He still remembered me as we reconnected though my children’s participation in the music program in the Hewlett-Woodmere school district. I, along with my children, were blessed by the wisdom of this man and he will always hold a special place in our hearts. His music is all around us. All we have to do is listen.

Kevin was more than a friend. While we worked together, shared times together, made music together, he was like a brother. We are the sum total of our life experiences and Kevin enhanced those experiences for me tenfold. His life outside of school was exemplary, whether it was his family or NYSSMA, Kevin gave 150 %. In school, teaching and sharing his abilities with others and especially me, it was more than special; it was unique. I will miss you but will forever remember your kindness, your spirit, your smile and most of all your true friendship. May God bless you and keep you.

Kevin was a wonderful friend and neighbor who we shared lots of great times and laughs with. We will miss him terribly but will always appreciate the many special times we had together. His love for Gale and his family and his fur babies are something we will always embrace. More than anything we will miss the sound of hearing him diving into his pool and of course my husband changing the channels on his outdoor TV and driving him crazy while he teased him about his beloved Giants and Yankees. Rest In Peace friend ❤️
