Kevin Richard Bayen, beloved son, brother, husband, father, mentor and friend, lost his courageous battle to advanced prostate cancer on March 11, 2022. He will always be remembered for his warmth, his deep love of family and friends, his devotion to the Hewlett-Woodmere Public Schools, and his commitment to music education in New York State.
Kevin began his career in the Hewlett-Woodmere Public Schools in 1979 where he served as an elementary, middle school and high school band director. In 1989, he was appointed District Director of Music Education in Hewlett-Woodmere, and in 2012 he assumed the position of District Director for Music and Art until retirement in 2016.
Kevin has served as President of the Nassau Music Educators Association (N.M.E.A.) as well as the President of the Nassau County Chapter of New York State Council of Administrators of Music Education (N.Y.S.C.A.M.E). From 1977-2003, he served on the Executive Council of NYSSMA as the Nassau County Zone 13 representative. He was also the co-director of the professional development workshops for the Nassau Chapter of NYSCAME.
An active All State Woodwind, All State Jazz, and a major organization festival adjudicator, Kevin assumed the position of Instrumental Jazz Coordinator in 2009 and moved on to become the chairperson for the All-State Instrumental Jazz Ensemble in 2012.
Kevin was humbled and honored to receive the NYSSMA Distinguished Service Award at the NYSSMA All State conference December 2021, in Rochester NY. On March 15, he is being honored with the Distinguished Service Award for the Nassau County Chapter of NYSCAME.
Kevin will be greatly missed by his wife Gale, their children, Matthew, Mike and his wife Megan, Michael , Ali and her fiancee Troy, his parents Art and Jean and his brother Keith and wife Lisa.
In lieu of flowers, the Bayen Family’s wishes are for contributions to be made to the HWPS Art & Music Field Trip Scholarship Fund.
