Martin J.“Marty” Fahy passed away peacefully at the age of 90 on December 2, 2024 where days before his death many family members had the gift to share their love and say goodbye either in person or by telephone. Marty’s greatest achievements were those people he spoke with and it helped ease his journey to let go and be out of pain. Marty was born on October 11, 1934 to Michael and Bridget Fahy who emigrated to the United States from Galway, Ireland. The Fahy family held onto their cherished Irish heritage while embracing all the gifts the new country was able to give them. They settled in the Woodside neighorhood of Queens in New York City where Michael worked as an elevator operator and Bridget cared for their four children, Michael, Marty, James, and Mary. The Fahy’s devout faith and hard work paid off and Marty was able to attend one of the best Catholic institutions in Manhattan, Rice High School, where he received an excellent education. Marty spent his teenage and early adult years in Woodside where he met the love of his life, Betty Ann Purcell. Although Betty Ann had been spoken for, her first husband died tragically of cancer at the age of 30. In keeping with his good character, Marty was there by Betty Ann’s side helping her cope with the loss and caring over her first two children, John and Lori O’Dwyer. Marty’s love was beyond compare for them all and he happily married his beloved Betty Ann and embraced John and Lori, flourishing as only a good father can do. Marty and Betty Ann could not wait to have more children and Marty was able to save enough money to move to the brand new suburbs of Suffolk County where he bought a new home in the once potato fields of Commack, NY. Mathew Fahy was born on July 26, 1965 and Robert “Bobby” Fahy came a few years later on April 5, 1967. Marty was incredibly proud of the family he built where in typical Irish fashion there were a lot of laughs and a few tears but always an outpouring of love. All four of Marty’s children have had successful lives as Marty was the first to sacrifice by working several jobs in order for them to have the kind of education he was able to receive. Marty doted on his family, never missing a game or an event, cheering each and everyone of his tribe to victory. Sadly, Marty’s beautiful Betty Ann passed away June 2, 1999 which left a hole in everyone’s heart, but Marty found a way to persevere, moving to Lake Ariel, Pa where he bought his country home and shared many happy years at The Hideout making countless friends and was able to enjoy retirement despite not having his Betty Ann by his side, which he said was not the same without her being there but he made the most of it knowing he would be with her again one day. Marty’s career spanned decades in the early days of IT he worked for various companies including Philip Morris, Grumman and The New York Transit Authority. Marty was also a proud Korean War Vet. Marty loved golf, Ireland, a good pub, a funny story, a big hug, a Black Russian and his family. He literally beamed when speaking about his children and grandchildren and would brag about him to just about everyone within earshot. Marty leaves behind a legacy of children and grandchildren including John Thomas O’Dwyer and wife Lori Youmans O’Dwyer, daughter Lori O’Dwyer, son Matt Fahy and wife Susan, son Bobby Fahy and wife Andrea. And his cherished grandchildren John Jr, Tommy, Kelsey, Jordan, Jaclyn, Kevin, Meagan, Colleen, Katie and Caroline, and his great grandson, Jacquln and Kevin’s boy, Grayson. What a wonderful life Marty lived, may he rest in peace.
