It is with deep sorrow and love that we announce the passing of Patrick Edward Tarpey, age 59, of Amityville, NY who passed away on June 1, 2025.

Patrick was a dedicated public servant, a beloved husband, a devoted father, and a cherished friend. He proudly served with the New York City Police Department as a Police Helicopter Pilot until his retirement in 2001. He frequently flew police aircraft in poor weather and hazardous conditions, often times placing himself at great personal risk in the service of others.

Upon retirement from the police department, Patrick subsequently joined Trans World Airways, and later American Airlines serving as a first officer. Patrick always had a passion for aircraft and flying and was able to achieve his dream.

Patrick was an avid surfer, sports enthusiast, baseball card collector, and author. One of this greatest achievements was his published work The Brooklyn Sunflower (2021), an unpretentious collection of poetry titled after the flowers that line the neighborhoods of Brooklyn, NY. Patrick’s writing exalt the beauty in simple things; the morning dawn, the night sky, and an assortment of moments in between. Patrick’s writings capture the warm, kind, and generous soul he was.

Patrick was pre-deceased by his loving wife Stella. He is survived by his children Elizabeth and Daniel, his parents Mary and John, and his siblings Regina, John, and Daniel.

Patrick’s courage, kindness, and dedication will never be forgotten. He served with honor and will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

I flew with Patrick many times while at American Airlines. He was a true gentleman, in every sense. He would sometimes arrange for his brother Dan, a NY detective, to transport us off of our LGA flights into the back of a police car, to save us from waiting for the employee bus. I have to admit I was a little nervous being back there, even though I knew I hadn’t done anything wrong. My wife and I had the opportunity to meet his wonderful wife Stella and her family. Remembering Patrick’s kindness during my cousins first visit to New York in 2007 in ranging for us to bypass the long lines and have a private elevator ride to the top of the Empire State Building. It was one of the highlights of their trip. My thoughts and prayers are with the Tarpey family during this sad time.

I worked with Pat when we were doing security for the Empire State Building back in the 2000s. Pat was quite the interesting guy, soft-spoken, funny and had lots of stories to tell. I recently spoke with him when he published his book of poetry and was looking for some support in the form of friendly reviews on Amazon.com. I kidded him and said only if you send me an autographed copy. He did send me a copy along with a personal note attached and I promptly left a good review about his book. This news is certainly startling and very sad. Pat was a good guy and he will be truly missed. I wish those that survive him the best of luck while dealing with this tragedy. It is with heavy hearts and deep sadness the entire McDonnell family offers condolences to Stella and the Tarpey family. I have known Patrick for years but we became closer after he moved back to Amityville. He was such a generous man of his time and action, with a quick wit and friendly to all who met him. My wife and I and Pat all got hired by TWA around the same time in the late 90s. Pat was a special human being, true gentleman, a kind soul - with a warriors spirit and huge heart. Patrick - You were my hero when I was little kid. I followed you around because I wanted to do everything that you did. We played nerf football in the street and you were always the quarterback. We carved our names in the wall up in Windham. I picked Patrick as my confirmation name because of you. I first met Pat while flying for TWA. Immediately we became friends. Pat flew as my copilot on my retirement flight. I can say without hesitation he was authentically the kindest person you could ever meet. My life was greatly enriched by his friendship. Rest in the peace of Jesus my dear friend.

I met Pat when we flew together in the NYPD Aviation Unit and remained in touch after we retired. A complete gentleman, great pilot and even better person. The world is a little dimmer today without Pat's bright light. My thoughts, prayers and condolences to Pat and the Tarpey family for the loss of both Pat and his wife, Stella. Prayers.
