Sarah Bridget McCormick, 97, passed away peacefully on February 21, 2025, and has returned home to our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Sarah, who was affectionately called, (Sally) was born in Claregalway, County Galway, Ireland on December 13, 1927 on a Dairy Farm. She was the seventh of eight children of Thomas and Margaret Hanley. Sally immigrated to the United States in 1952, aboard the Queen Mary. She quickly settled in New York and met, fell in love and married John McCormick in June of 1960. They
moved to Massapequa, Long Island when they bought their first home in 1969. The love of her life, John, died this past December after 64 years of marriage. Their love was so strong we all knew that she would join him in heaven soon after he passed.
Sally had three children, John (Sean), Bernadette and Patrick. She loved to bake, cook, sew and knit. She was famous for her Irish Soda Bread, which was passed down to her children. Sunday mornings, coming down the stairs, we were greeted with the sound of the Irish Hour on the radio, the smell of a full breakfast and freshly baked Irish Soda bread. Afterwards, it was off to mass. Sally and John belonged to the Irish American Society, and she loved going to the dances (Ceili) and doing the Siege of Ennis or the Stack of Barley. Many summers, the family went to the Irish Feises and watched Bernadette compete in Irish Step Dancing and John and Patrick playing in bagpipe competitions. It was a great life steeped in
love of Ireland and America.
Sally loved all kinds of animals, especially our numerous dogs and cats we had over the years. She would dress them up, have them sit on her lap and she would talk to them as if they were her children. Very often, when she visited us in our homes, she would look for our pets and play and spoil them through out the visit. Her brother once stated, “they had to hide the farm animals because Sally would spoil them.”
Her love for her grandchildren was immeasurable. Sally would melt every time a new grandchild would be born and she loved to shower them with sweets. She has a total of eight grandchildren, Sean, Cara, Conor, Meghan, Matthew, Sean, Patrick and Mary Kate. Sally also has seven great-grandchildren. Many times, Sally would call her grandchildren at their college to check in and see how they were doing. She would love seeing everyone during the holidays and she had so much joy in just talking to her grandchildren.
Sally leaves behind her three children, John (Sean) his wife, Maria, Bernadette her husband, James, and Patrick and his wife, Bernadette. She also leaves behind eight grand children and seven great-grandchildren. She will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her. Her beautiful Irish Brogue will always echo in our hearts whenever we think of her.
God Bless Sarah McCormick
