Theodore Paul Stanley, 75, of Rocky Point, NY, passed away peacefully on July 8, 2024, surrounded by his loving family.
Theodore, known affectionately as Paul, was born on April 24, 1949, in Chicago, Illinois, to Dr. Theodore and Lenore Stanley. He was raised with a strong sense of duty and compassion, qualities that he carried throughout his life.
Paul spent his early childhood in Chicago, where he lived until the age of nine. In 1958, his father received interfaith Fulbright Scholarships to study abroad, first at Catholic University in Würzburg, Germany, and then at Hebrew Union College in Cincinnati, Ohio. The experience of living abroad left a lasting impression on young Paul. In 1964, the family moved to Germany permanently after Paul’s father obtained his PhD from the University of Chicago. In Germany, Paul attended Schuldorf Gymnasium in Seeheim-Jugenheim before transferring to Frankfurt American High School, where he graduated in 1968.
Paul earned his Master of Social Work degree from the Wurzweiler School of Social Work at Yeshiva University. He also held a Master of Divinity degree, specializing in Counseling, from North American Baptist Seminary in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. His educational journey began with two years at Trinity College in Deerfield, Illinois, before he obtained his Bachelor of Arts degree from Bob Jones University in South Carolina, where he majored in Bible studies and minored in Greek. Paul achieved the status of Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW), reflecting his dedication and expertise in the field.
Paul’s career was a testament to his lifelong commitment to helping those in need. He served as an Intensive Case Manager at the New York State Office of Mental Health since 1987, working in psychiatric hospital settings at Creedmoor Psychiatric Center and later at Pilgrim Psychiatric Center. He provided direct services to chronically mentally ill, homeless, and chemically dependent individuals, with responsibilities including crisis intervention, treatment planning, and supportive case management. In addition to his work with the state, Paul was self-employed as a family and marriage counselor, demonstrating his dedication to supporting individuals and families through difficult times. Earlier in his career, Paul worked as a counselor for Catholic Charities in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, for two years..
Paul’s contributions to the field of social work were recognized with numerous awards, including the Queensboro Council for Social Welfare and United Way of New York City’s award for Outstanding Service to the People of Queens and the Social Work Profession. He was also honored with the Management Confidential Special Achievement Award by the New York State Office of Mental Health.
Paul was deeply committed to his faith and dedicated his life to Christ. He found joy in serving as a minister and was ordained by the State of New York. He served as a pastor at the First Baptist Church in Valley Stream, NY, from 1981 to 1991. His compassionate nature and desire to uplift others were evident in his volunteer work and community involvement.
Paul was a caring brother to his sister Sharon, a loving father to his five children, Michael (and wife Debbie), Kristin (and husband Ricardo), Kevin (and fiance Kathy), Timothy (and wife Tracy), and Erika, and a proud grandfather to six grandchildren, Ella (13), Noah (11), Paige (10), Everly (8), Ethan (7), and Isla (5). He cherished spending time with his family. His beloved pets were also significant and spiritual companions in his life.
Paul had a deep love for music and was skilled at playing the piano and guitar. He also had a beautiful singing voice. He was an avid reader and a talented writer, with a profound appreciation for books. Paul was multilingual, showcasing his intellectual curiosity and love for learning. He enjoyed the outdoors, especially the beach and camping.
A memorial service will be held on July 14, 2024, from 2:00 – 6:00 PM at Massapequa Funeral Home on Merrick Road. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the American Stroke Association.
Paul’s warmth, kindness, and unwavering dedication to helping others will be deeply missed. His legacy of compassion and service will continue to inspire all who knew him.
