Anthony Salvatore Cali, a long-time educator, passed away at home surrounded by family at age 62 on December 24, 2017 after a battling cancer for over a year. Born to Lucy and Tony Cali, he grew up in Brooklyn with older brother Joseph and younger sisters Barbara Ann and Lucille. After marrying his wife Mary he moved to Queens, and then they settled in Massapequa Park over twenty years ago with their children, Stephanie, Laura and Jonathan. His family expanded further when Stephanie married Ryan Langlois, and his grandson Elliott Anthony was born this year.He received a Bachelor of Arts and Master of Science in Education from Hunter College and Administration and Supervision Diploma from Queens College. He began his career teaching students with special needs at private schools in Manhattan, and then at P.S. 207 in Queens. He became the Assistant Principal at 207 then obtained his dream job as principal of Cornwell Avenue School in West Hempstead, New York until his retirement in 2016. He also taught professional development courses for Nassau BOCES, presented at national educational conferences, and was once a president of the Nassau County Elementary School Principal’s Association.Anthony’s favorite activities included spending time with family and friends whether it was at Yankee games or skiing or monthly themed dinners. He was an avid baker and costume maker creating elaborate costumes and decorations for any occasion. His artistic talents extended to innumerable craft projects, and his favorite gift was a Michaels gift card. This became all the more obvious between Halloween and Christmas when his decorating, nutcrackers, and baking skills would overtake his home. In the past decade he also embarked on a project to research his family history. He uncovered more about his family’s past, which connected him with new family members around the country. These new connections were just another way he enjoyed his life with family and friends. Anthony was also a proud Usher at St. Rose of Lima R.C. Church.
