Jerald Edward Mooney (Jerry) passed away at the age of 93 on February 9, 2023. Born on August 15, 1929, in the Bronx, NY. Jerry was the son of Arthur Francis Mooney and Mary Elizabeth Mooney (Kennedy). He grew up alongside his two older brothers Arthur and Thomas.
Jerry graduated from Mount Saint Michael High School in 1945. He completed one year at Iona College before enlisting in the Air Force in 1948. He was stationed in Washington, DC where he specialized in Communications and Cryptography during the Korean War. Upon discharge from the Air Force in 1952, he worked for CBS in New York, NY in communications. In 1960, he began his career in the NYPD where he served in various positions around the NYC area and worked his way up to Seargent of the Task Force in Brooklyn. Despite his busy work and family life, he successfully and completed his bachelor’s degree from St John’s University, Queens NY. He retired from the NYPD in 1981 and began the next stage of his career in accounting at Purolator Currier. After he retired from his accounting career, he kept himself busy working in private security.
He met the love of his life Sarah (Sally) Ann Mooney (Flannery) of 91st Road Queens Village at a dance in Germantown NYC,1958 and they married in February 1960. Together they settled in Massapequa Park, NY where they raised their three beloved daughters Teresa, Elizabeth (Liz), and Jeanine.
Jerry was the doting father and husband that many only dreamed of. He was available at a moment’s notice to offer any help he could to his children and grandchildren. He was able to be there daily for his grandchildren who lived close by. He often made the 7-hour round trip drive to Lincoln, MA to visit his youngest daughter Jeanine and her family until he was 86.
Jerry loved swimming and could often be found doing laps at Marjorie Post pool and Tobay Beach. He enjoyed vacationing with his family in Chatham, MA, and traveling the east coast with Sally to visit family.
Jerry was a man of faith and loved God which inspired him to devote many hours of his time to the St Rose of Lima Outreach Program. He was a huge fan of Notre Dame football since he was a teenage boy. He was able to fulfill a lifelong dream of seeing a game when his grandson Michael attended Notre Dame as a student. Jerry was a curious person and had a lifelong passion for learning. He loved keeping up on politics and history throughout his entire life and he was an avid reader. And, he absolutely loved spending time with his 9 grandchildren, driving them around in his white Ford Taurus making corny jokes, and proclaiming they were destined for Hollywood because they were all stars in his eyes.
Jerry leaves behind his beloved wife of 63 years, Sarah Mooney: his daughter Teresa Lucente of Bethpage, NY; his daughter Elizabeth and her husband Joseph Galzerano of Garden City, NY; his daughter Jeanine Hodges and her husband Peter of Lincoln, MA; and nine grandchildren, Kristen, Meghan and Kirsten Lucente, Michael Galzerano and his fiancé Caroline Castellano, Sarah and Katherine Galzerano, Emma, Caroline, and Ian Hodges. He was predeceased by his son-in-law Jim Lucente and his brothers Arthur and Thomas Mooney.
