It is with great sadness that the family of Joan Elizabeth Scanlon announce her passing on October 20, 2024. During her 87 years, Joan was the heart of the family and will be missed by all. She was born on April 24, 1937 in Queens, NY to loving parents John and Marie Hirx. She moved to Massapequa, NY in 1963 to raise a family with her cherished husband William Scanlon. Joan was a devoted mother to Daniel Scanlon, Jean Folchetti and Mary Beth Joyce.

In her younger days, Joan loved to take the family on camping trips, and they would travel up and down the east coast every summer. She prided herself as being a great organizer and was always available to offer her opinion on how to make a project better. Joan volunteered with scouting, taught catechism, and delivered Meals on Wheels. She was a homemaker for several years before working at Chase bank where she made several great friendships which remained throughout her life.

Joan was preceded in death by her husband William Scanlon, her parents John & Marie (Klein) Hirx, her brother Raymond Hirx, and her son Daniel (Laura) Scanlon. She is survived by her daughters Jean Folchetti, Mary Beth (Dan) Joyce and her grandchildren Amy (Ryan), Meghan (Bill) and Jennifer (Christian) Folchetti, Lauren, Michelle and Olivia Scanlon, Emily, Myles (Victoria), and Owen Joyce. She is also survived by her great granddaughter Grace Elizabeth Spadaro.

Condolences to the family. So many memories to share - kitchen chats, backyard camping, living room visits … Mrs Scanlon away had time and kindness for us. She was warm and accepting. She will be missed. Hugs and love - Janine

Dear Jean, Mary Beth, family and friends, Don and I offer our loving, heartfelt condolences on the passing of Joan. She will always be missed. Our Aunt Joan was all about family, caring for others and making sure everyone was comfortable, to mention just a few of her wonderful qualities. We had a big family with get togethers, reunions, and visits. Aunt Joan was like another loving and kind mother to me and to all of us. She had her lovely smile, her helping nature, and she was so kind, yet able to keep everything organized and together, that I have never heard Joan raise her voice! (For that matter, never heard Uncle Bill raise his voice either). There are the Lords angels on earth, and to us, Joan was one of them. May the Lord bless her and keep her close, forevermore. I worked with Joan years ago at Chemical Bank. The Chemical Bank Gang have been getting together for lunch and Joan always attended, we just had lunch recently. Joan was a beautiful, kind, and loving person who often spoke about how much she loved her family. May God bless Joan always and may she rest-in-peace. Joan will be missed. My sincere condolences to her family.
