Paul Michael Cooney Sr., 56, of Bellmore, NY passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on January 22, 2025.
Born and raised in Massapequa, NY, Paul was the beloved son of Joseph and Barbara Cooney. He was the sixth born of nine children in a tight-knit Irish Catholic family. He graduated from Massapequa High School in 1986. He went on to college at SUNY Oneonta where he earned a bachelor’s Degree in Business and Economics. Paul was involved in Greek Life on campus and was a proud founding father of the Beta Omega Gamma Fraternity. It was during these years that he affectionately became known as “The Corndog”.
Paul raised his family in Bellmore in a beautiful waterfront home where he enjoyed boating, fishing, and days at the beach and was always inviting friends and family to join in the fun. He was very involved in his community and his children’s sports and activities. He coached baseball, softball, soccer, and basketball and also taught religion at St. Barnabas parish. He was an avid New York sports fan, being a season ticket holder of the Mets, and could often be seen screaming and chanting from the couch during any Jets or Knicks game. From an early age, Paul’s life was surrounded by music and dancing. He enjoyed playing piano and singing along with his musical family while busting down on the dance floor at any wedding or party attended. Paul was well known for his soulful karaoke renditions of “Beast of Burden” by The Rolling Stones or “Your Song” by Elton John. A leading factor in Paul’s life was his desire to share all of his hobbies and passions with the people around him. Paul was always generous about asking any and all friends or family around him to concerts, games, or social events, and was known to be the life of the party. He was not only a high roller on Wall Street, but also a high roller in the casinos, and could also be seen at the blackjack table wearing one of his signature colorful patterned shirts. But at the core of all these things was his devoted faith in God and his passion for sharing that faith with others. Family and friends were a priority in Paul’s life, making friends wherever he went and keeping a close relationship with all those dear to him. He built countless relationships throughout his career in finance and was a well-known titan of Wall Street. He is survived by his three children, Paul Jr, Meagan, and Camryn, his 8 brothers and sisters, Mary Theroux, Susan (Peter) Bies, Joseph (Banu) Cooney, Andy (Susana) Cooney, Barbara (William) Tracey, Monica (Adrian) Arav, Raymond (Lori) Cooney, Stephen (Anne-Michele) Cooney, his stepmother, Lorraine Cooney, his 28 nieces and nephews, and his 10 great nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Paul’s name may be made to the LiveOn NY Foundation to support their mission of awareness and education, research, and services for donor families and transplant patients.
