Victoria Sferlazza left a message on January 8, 2024:
I knew Sal, Prof. La Gumina, from years ago, from the CSJ, and then from NCC. I missed the last Italian American Heritage Day at the college and, sadly, didn't read my e-mail in time to attend the wake or funeral, but I have two of his co-authored publications as well as memories of times and places participated in with him and other Italian Americans, and best of all his teachings about a shared heritage. I once traveled at night to Westchester Community College to hear colleague Prof. La Gumina speak about his book and the horror of being "enemy aliens." My loved ones, too, knew the unspeakable shame of this injustice. As a result of Sal's motivating my attendance at a luncheon at the Pompei Restaurant, which I think was an AIHA event, I found out about and went on a trip to Bari, Puglia with SUNY Farmingdale. When I realized Prof. La Gumina's absence from Nassau Community College, I tried to interest him in going for coffee so I could find out whether his work at NCC would be carried on, but we lost contact. I didn't know he probably was in his 90's then. He didn't look his age. His academic presence will be missed, but his work lives on. As a first-generation college student and professional, a learned Sicilian American, as Prof. La Gumina was, is an important and impressive being. My condolences to his family, his wife, children and grandchildren, whose loss now is greater. May he rest in peace.

Sadly I saw him a couple of times, but through the words of the family I can get to know what a great man he was. Smart, hardworking, lovely. And so is his whole family. I can't be there..but my heart can. My condolences John and LaGumina family. With all my love, Monica (Jorge's mom)
