Gerasimos Vavassis, 91, passed away on June 27, 2024, surrounded by family.
He was born September 7, 1932, in Cephalonia Greece, the son of Dionisos and Tzogianna.
Gerasimos (Jerry) served as a policeman for the Evzones (Palace Guard) in Greece. Later in the U.S., he was a bartender at the landmark Fraunces Tavern Restaurant in NYC for 36 years.
He immigrated to the United States in 1957 at the age of twenty-five and married Mary Bagetakos in 1959. They settled in Brooklyn and went on to have two children Joanne and Dennis. In 1972, they moved to Massapequa Park, NY to the house where Jerry lived the rest of his days.
In addition to his parents, Jerry was predeceased by his wife Mary, his eldest sister Ageliki and youngest brother Constantinos. He is survived by his children Joanne and Dennis and their respective spouses Mark and Nancy, as well as his four grandchildren: Nicholas, Robert (Victoria), Thomas and Jack. He is also survived by his siblings- Panagis (Ismini) Andreas (Chrisanthi ) Glykeria, his sister-in-law Despina, and his sister Anastasia (Panagis) and by many loving cousins, nieces, and nephews.
The wake will be held on July 5, 2024, at the Massapequa Funeral Home North Chapel, and the funeral will be held at St. Markella Greek Orthodox Church, Wantagh, NY on July 6th at 11:15am.
