A devoted husband of sixty-four years to his beloved wife Carol, Jim was the proud father of six children: Jim Jr., Daniel, Lauren, Janet, Sharon, and Barbara Jean. He viewed his role as a father as more than a title, showering his family with love and support. Jim’s heart grew fuller as his family expanded to include one daughter-in-law (Carol Ann), three sons-in-law (Peter, Patrick, and Rich), and twelve grandchildren. He found endless fun and joy in their presence.
Jim, the youngest child of Joseph Wilbur Lowell and Edna Marie (Blumenthal) Lowell, was born in 1936. His Brooklyn upbringing, coupled with his summer life in Hampton Bays, NY, instilled in him the values of resilience, determination, and the importance of family bonds and friendships. He cherished the memories of his parents and siblings, Joseph, Jr. (Bill) and Marie, who preceded him in passing, along with the love he shared with his nieces, nephews, and godchildren.
Jim’s zest for life extended beyond family ties. A Community College of New York and Adelphi University graduate, Jim was also a sports and fitness enthusiast, tackling tennis, paddleball, golf, and basketball with gusto. His infectious competitive spirit inspired those around him to be their best. Yet, amidst the rivalries and competition, Jim’s true victory lay in the friendships, connections, and memories he shared with his teammates, on and off the court. Jim was especially proud of coaching and playing tennis with his USTA teammates and friends.
Professionally, Jim’s dedication shone through his over 30 years with Amoco Oil, where he excelled as an Area Manager for Long Island. He was a trailblazer in remote work long before it became commonplace, always making time to coach or attend his children’s sporting events and activities. In his ‘retirement,’ Jim continued to enrich lives as a bus driver for Catholic Charities of Long Island for fourteen years, embodying the spirit of service and friendship. Jim was an active member of the St. Rose of Lima parish, where he coached boys’ and girls’ CYO basketball and softball and served on the parish council and with the Knights of Columbus for over 25 years.
Jim’s roots were deep in Massapequa Park, where he resided for sixty years, leaving a stamp on the community he called home. He loved driving his Camaro convertible on weekends to play paddleball, tennis, or an occasional pick-up basketball game at his favorite places, Marjorie Post Park and John J. Burns Park.
Jim’s warm smile, booming laugh, generous heart, and ability to embrace every moment with presence will be dearly missed by all who knew him. Rest peacefully, Big Jim, knowing your legacy of love and laughter will live on in the hearts of those you touched.
