John Francis Avena, beloved husband, father, and grandfather, passed away peacefully on April 22, 2023, at the age of 91. He was born on March 14, 1932, in New York City, to the late Joseph and Jenny Avena. John was a proud veteran of the Korean War, having served his country with honor.
John was a dedicated husband to his wife Elaine, whom he had been dating since he was 14 years old. Together they built a life filled with love, joy, and cherished memories. John was a devoted father to his children, Joanne and her husband Kenny, John and his wife Danielle, and Anthony and his wife Fran. He took great pride in being a grandfather to his eight grandchildren, namely Jake, Chris, Ally, Jenny, Abby, Emily, Julia, and Max. He cherished spending time with them and was a constant source of support and encouragement at their sporting events, concerts, and recitals. He looked forward to traditional Sunday family dinners, where they all enjoyed Elaine’s delicious meatballs and sauce.
John lived a wonderful life and enjoyed golfing, fishing, and spending time at the clubhouse with his wife and friends. His time in the military instilled in him a deep sense of patriotism and a strong work ethic, which he carried with him throughout his life.
John will be remembered for his kind heart, his love for his family, his service to his country, and his unwavering dedication to those he cared about. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
A funeral mass will be held on Thursday, April 27, 2023, at St. Rose of Lima Church in Massapequa. Visitation will be held at the Massapequa funeral home on Wednesday, April 26, 2023.
