John J. Nolan died, surrounded by family, at his residence in Massapequa Park, NY on June 22, 2018. He was 87 years old.He is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, the former Patricia Therese Dolan; his sisters, Rosemary Matthews and Margaret Rupp; his brother-in-law, John Dolan (Lawrice); his children, Joseph (Maureen), Frances Crotty (James), John (Ellie), James (Stacy Wood), Maureen Fearon (Stephen), Denis (Dana), and Rev. Patrick C. Nolan, S.J.; his grandchildren, Brenna, Bridget Kyle. (Bobby), Kiera (Ashton), Riordan, Jack (Tessa), Rosie, Nolan, Owen, Joseph, Nicholas, Maura, Natalie, Isabel; and Matthews, Rupp, and Dolan nieces and nephews.Raised in Williston Park, NY, Jack received a congressional appointment to the United States Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA), Kings Point, NY. As a midshipman engineering student onboard the SS Pioneer Sea in 1949, he earned the United States Lines’ Lifesaving Medal by his service as a member of the lifeboat crew during a hazardous at sea rescue of shipwrecked Japanese merchant sailors. In 1952, Jack graduated from USMMA with a BS in Marine Engineering and his USCG Third Engineer’s license. He was awarded the Admiral Stedman Trophy for achieving the highest levels of sportsmanship and athletic excellence as captain of the Kings Point baseball and basketball teams. Over the years Jack (“Jack Nolan ’52”) volunteered in different capacities with the USMMA Alumni Association, his class organization, and the local Long Island chapter.Jack sailed as an engineering officer with States Marine and United States Lines shipping companies. He was proud of his service onboard the SS United States, flagship of the United States Lines, which had achieved the fastest Atlantic Ocean crossing record.In 1953 Jack was recalled from reserve status to active duty by the U.S. Navy. He served as the Main Propulsion Engineering Officer in the USS WABASH (APA 105) during the Korean War and the combat evacuation of the retreating Nationalist Chinese military and civilians from the Tachen Islands, China.Upon discharge from active service, he attended New York University earning a Master’s in Education and taught mathematics and coached freshman boys’ basketball at Uniondale High School. He later graduated from St. John’s University Law School with a Juris Doctorate degree. Jack taught admiralty law courses at USMMA until accepting a position practicing maritime law in New York City. In 1994 he retired as General Counsel and Chief Risk Officer for American Trading and Transportation Corporation.Over the years he contributed to his community as a St. Rose of Lima CYO director, basketball coach/referee, baseball coach/umpire, and other volunteer positions. Together with his wife, Pat, he taught Confraternity of Christian Doctrine (CCD) high school Catholic religion classes, led Marriage Encounter weekend retreats, and was active in Teams of Our Lady.In the summers he spent time with his family at a Miller Place vacation cottage and was a three-time winner of the Miller Beach Surf Club golf tournament.In his retirement he enjoyed playing senior softball in the summers for the TOBAY Pirates in the Long Island Senior Softball Association and in the winters for the Jupiter Senior Softball Association in Jupiter, FL. The Long Island Tigers, his senior softball all-star team, were two-time World Series champions. He traveled with Pat to visit family and support many of his children’s and grandchildren’s activities.
