Margaret Chanda, beloved mother, grandmother and great grandmother passed away peacefully in her sleep on March 27, 2024, after a brief illness at 95 years of age. She was attended by her daughter, Laureen, when she passed. She was a longtime resident of Massapequa and was active in the Massapequa Women’s Club and PEO, (Philanthropic Educational Organization). Margaret taught 2nd and 3rd grade at Unqua School for 26 years and was loved by students and parents alike.
Margaret is survived by her three children, Laureen, Kathleen and Edward, eight grandchildren, Megan, Edward John, Michael, Brian, Katherine, Jonathan, Laura and Stephen, as well as two great granddaughters, Kaitlyn and Avery.
There will be a viewing at Massapequa Funeral Home, South Chapel, 4980 Merrick Rd., Massapequa Park on Monday, April 1 from 3-6pm. A funeral mass will be celebrated at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, in Massapequa at 10am on April 2, followed by interment at Long Island National Cemetery at 2040 Wellwood Ave, Farmingdale, where she will join her beloved husband, Edward Chanda, and her son James.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial donation to Massapequa PEO in Margaret’s name would be greatly appreciated by the family. Checks should be send to Carol Hartzell, 87 Pittsburgh Ave., Massapequa, NY 11758 and made out to PEO Chapter F Massapequa, with the notation “in memory of Margaret Chanda”. Mom was a great believer in supporting women around the world advancing through higher education.
