Mary Ellen Gallagher nee Hession, 106, a Gold Star mother, of Massapequa Park and previously New Hyde Park. She was predeceased by her husband Charles, son Michael and step-daughter Helen. She is survived by children: Kathleen Ewen (John), Donna Fodera (John), Mary Reff (Mark), Charles, Joseph, her sister Margaret Hession, numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, and nieces and nephews.
She was the oldest of nine children, 1 boy and 8 girls. During the Depression she began working at Con Edison where she stayed until her marriage in 1945. While raising her family, she worked as a public stenographer and legal secretary. Later, she worked for New York Life Insurance Company and St. John’s University. When she “retired” she worked in various temporary jobs while helping to raise her grandchildren and volunteering at Covenant House, Birthright and St. Joseph’s Hospital in Bethpage until she was 90 years old. She was an active member of Notre Dame RC Church, New Hyde Park and later Our Lady of Lourdes and St. Rose of Lima, Massapequa Park.
She touched countless people during her life and will be remembered fondly by all.
