Muriel Helen Fischofer (age 88)On Friday, March 1, 2019 Muriel passed away at the Sunrise Assisted Living Facility in Raleigh North Carolina, with her daughter Carol Hahn by her side.An only child, Muriel was born in Brooklyn, New York on December 7, 1930 to Helen and Severa Picoli. She attended Richmond Hill High School and graduated with honors. On May 15, 1954, Muriel married another only child, William Charles Fischofer, the dashing Merchant Marine she met in 1953.Determined to have a large family, Muriel and Bill had five children. They loved the water – even though Muriel only learned how to do the dog paddle as she did not like to get her hair wet – and moved to Searingtown Long Island where they lived for 24 years. Summers were spent sailing aboard the “Nereid” catamaran on the Long Island Sound, taking their children to swimming lessons at the Williston Park Pool and enjoying the sun and sand at Jones Beach. Both Muriel and Bill worked for the Board of Education for the city of New York for 30 years and retired in 1992. In retirement, Muriel and Bill traveled to Japan, Ireland, England, and Greece. When they finally stopped traveling, they settled once again on the water in East Marion, New York and Deerfield Beach, Florida. Muriel and Bill moved to Raleigh, North Carolina in 2013 to care for Muriel after she was diagnosed with Parkinson’s.Muriel is survived by her husband of 64 years, William Charles Fischofer; her five children, Bill Fischofer of Austin, TX; Linda Circo of Vienna, VA; John Fischofer of Massapequa Park, NY; Bob Fischofer of Amherst, NH and Dr. Carol Hahn of Raleigh, NC. She is also survived by 16 grandchildren and one great grandchild. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests a contribution made in Muriel’s name to Georgetown University Fund a Fellow for Parkinson’s Program. link for video: https://alumni.georgetown.edu/what-to-support/fund-a-fellow-video link for contribution: https://bit.ly/fundafellow or call Georgetown University for a secure contribution: 202-298-5520
