Jimmy Lewis left a message on April 3, 2022:
When Mima knew the end was near and she was trying to get everything in order she turned and looked at me and said: “who’s making my speeches? I better have a lot of people say some nice things. ” Mima, I hope this is up to your standards, Dolly. 80 years doesn’t seem like enough with the toughest, funniest, sharpest, fiercest and hardest loving woman. She was a self described “tough Irish broad” who never let a person forget just how strong the Irish could be when forced into a corner. But underneath that, there was the heart that kept us all together and in Pampa’s words, “the cornerstone of the family.” She could make you laugh until you cried, give you tough love when you needed it, and try her best to give you a lifetime’s worth of advice. Mima made us feel special when others couldn’t—quietly slipped a 20 into your pocket just because—and never passed up a dot of wine and “one more story” about her past because we wanted to hear. She once told me a story about an afternoon her and Pamps had spent on the beach in Montauk. Next to them was an older couple who visited regularly. With his feet sunk into the sand and his wife by his side, the old man looked out into the ocean and said, “This is the life. What more could you ask for?” Mima said years later she saw the woman come back with her grandson but without her husband and they assumed he had passed away. The older woman watched the ocean and let the sun hit her like she did with her husband, but it wasn’t the same. She could never recreate that moment—there was always a piece missing. There was happiness and love after Pamp, but it wasn’t the same without him. And although it’s painful without Mima, we know she’s happy to be back with the love of her life. The hardest part about losing grandparents is accepting the fact you’ll live the rest of your life without them, but you take solace in the fact they’ve found each other all over again. It’s the first big heartache you learn to live with, but you take them with you. I like to imagine somewhere, wherever it is that’s next, they’re sitting on the beach—a glass of wine and a cup of coffee with a corn muffin, watching the sun set saying, “That was a life. What more could we ask for?” If it’s one thing she impressed upon us, it was the fact that she was one of the last of the 100% Irish left, so this is for you mima: “may the road rise to meet you, and the wind always be at your back. May the sun shine warm upon your face, and the rains fall softly upon your fields. And until we meet again, may god hold you gently in the palm of his hand.”
