Tom Cook left a message on June 23, 2014:
When I arrived in the Social Studies Department at NHP in 1996, both Paul LaBella & his fellow building rep, Ron, were a most effective team, representing and defending SFT members against arbitrary and unfair treatment. Sometimes that meant standing up to our chairperson, or even our principal at the time. Paul always had your back, and if he was called on to participate in any union activity, you could count on his enthusiastic participation, especially so when he knew the cause was just. Whether it was informational picketing before school because of a lack of contract, or at a Board of Ed meeting, protesting the dismissal of a married non-tenured teacher for the “sin” of maternity, or as a voice of reason standing up for us at faculty meetings, Paul was fearless. He would draw upon his considerable experience and patiently explain to new teachers, and not so new teachers, the importance of professionalism and the necessity of supporting each other. I enjoyed the times we could sit and talk history, or debate and laugh about politics. Often that took place in his classroom, under the model airplanes from WWI and WWII that were suspended from the ceiling. Paul’s classroom had a unique character where students were immersed in the subject. Paul’s love and knowledge of history, his fairness, his gentle and caring nature, all left an indelible imprint upon his students. I will miss you Paul.

Mr. LaBella was our neighbor for over 30 years. He was a neighbor that all would want to have. He was always helpful, concerned and loving to my wife and I, and our 5 children. I saw him in action many times in different roles. It was evident that he was, but not limited to, a very good husband, father, brother, brother-in-law, son-in-law, father-in-law, grandfather, friend, school teacher, patriot and servant of the Lord. We were always "on the same page" with many topics, including politics, religion and the Yankees. Since I was more into math and science, I really appreciated him mentoring some of my children with history comprehensive exams and projects.I really enjoyed our conversations spanning over 3 decades. We will miss him dearly. May he rest in peace!Brian and Frances Malone & Children (Kristen, James, Stephen, Katherine, Jaclyn) Massapequa Park, NY

Chuck - Very sorry to hear about your loss. You are the shining example of his spirit and generosity. The brief time we hung out in LA seems timeless - and it's odd that 17 years ago seems like yesterday! I still remember that great pasta at your birthday party in Massapequa Park.

My condolences to the Labella family. Mr. Labella was my Social Studies teacher in 1985. He always kept me after class and spoke with me (about life and deep stuff a 14 year old kids can't understand yet) well into his lunch time. He always looked out for me and was one of those men who took an added interest is making sure I was doing OK.
