William J. O’Sullivan of Massapequa Park on January 31, 2024. Beloved husband of Bridget (deceased). Loving father of William (Shirley) of Massapequa, NY, Brian (Floss) of Montclair, NJ, Michael (Meryl) of Long Beach, NY, Graceann Bisig (Jeffrey) of Millburn, NJ, and John (Jennifer) of Frisco, TX. Predeceased by his parents, James and Anne O’Sullivan. Cherished grandfather of Kristina, William, Matthew, Daniel, Timothy, Steven, Shane, Lauren, and Kayla O’Sullivan and Mark and Andrew Bisig. Caring brother of Peggy O’Sullivan, Teresa Slevin and the late Eugene and Maureen O’Sullivan. Also survived by many loving nieces and nephews.
Bill O’Sullivan completed a 38 year NYPD career when he retired in 1994 with the Three Star Rank of Chief of Personnel. He was 24 years old when he entered the Department in October 1956 shortly after his discharge from the Army. He was assigned to the 24th Precinct in Manhattan and promoted to Sergeant in 1965 where he was assigned to the 75th Precinct in Brooklyn. He received promotions to Lieutenant (11th Division in Brooklyn South) and Captain in 1972 (Brooklyn North Borough). He was the Commanding Officer of the 83rd Precinct in Bushwick (1975-77) and the 77th Precinct in Crown Heights (1977-79). He continued to rise up the department ranks – Deputy Inspector, Commanding Officer of the Police Academy (1979), Inspector, Commanding Officer of the Public Morals Division (1985), Deputy Chief Commanding Officer of the Intelligence Division (1989), Assistant Chief, Commanding Officer Patrol Borough Brooklyn South (1991). He was named Chief of Personnel in 1992 by Police Commissioner Ray Kelly which he served until his retirement in 1994.
His accomplishments in the NYPD were matched by his pursuit of higher education. He received his Bachelors Degree in Criminal Justice from New York Institute of Technology (NYIT) in 1975, a Masters Degree in Labor Relations from NYIT (1979), and received the NYPD St. John’s Law School Degree Scholarship and passed the Bar Exam in 1985.
Bill met his future wife Bridget(“Bridie”) Conaghan on October 15, 1961, at a dance at the Roosevelt Hotel. They were married on April 20, 1963, and enjoyed 58 years of marriage. Bill and Bridie were hands on parents and grandparents, extremely proud of their children, spouses, and grandchildren accomplishments. They enjoyed their annual family vacations in Ocean City, MD, and spending time with their family. They were loyal parishioners of St. Rose of Lima Church in Massapequa for over 50 years and were proud supporters of St. Rose of Lima School and Catholic education.
